Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a member ofthe cucumber family that grows wild in south central China. Its benefitswere first described in 1578 in one of Chinas most famous herbals, theCompendium of Materia Media (Ben Cao Gang Mu). Jiaogulan was regardedby the Chinese people as a strength and endurance enhancer, likeginseng, but better. In modern times, jiaogulan has been researchedfor its adaptogenic properties.
